I Decide

I marched in

halfway through

three months of

treatments and

said with authority

“You said Taxol

would be easier.

It isn’t.”

—

they listened

—

“Today” my voice

was clear. “Today

I want copies of

everything: blood

pressure, temperature,

blood work numbers

everything

—

they gave them 

to me

—

“Today is different”

I told calm doctor

as if he didn’t know

“You tell me if it’s

a ‘go’ for today’s 

treatment

—

but then you need

to sell me again

on why i’m

doing this

—

give me statistics

name my options

say your best judgment

—

and then

then I’ll decide

if it’s a ‘go'”

—

he did that

—

I decided to

keep going

but on that day

I claimed strength

and power and

control

—

I never let go

of them again

A Week of Weakness

Sunday I buy chips and eat some too
Tuesday I swear off but the chips just flew
to the bowl where they were just the day before
Wednesday I decide not to go to the store
I finish up the bag on Wednesday night
Thursday is the day where the sun shines bright
so bright I buy a bag to just see me through
the weekend that is coming and I already knew
every day of the week I’ve eaten chip – chip – chip
they’re so very salty they’ll look good on my hip
Friday and Saturday the chips I’ll seek
because ev’ry single day I am weak – weak – weak

Chip Warning

the warning should be there
on package clear to see
so one who’s overeating
could readily agree
that they’d been warned and really knew
without a single doubt
that if they ate one hundred chips
they then should give a shout
for people to come fast who know
how with a little luck
to put her body together again
cause she’s gonna self-destruct

The Clown

I’ve never been a bouncy clown
bright – but not bouncy
disheveled orange hair
orange polkadot clownsuit
and big red galumphey shoes
but not bouncy

I’m a silent clown
and gentle
I carry Josa with me
she’s a sea otter
most people like to pet her
‘cause she’s soft
and a little shy

I stood in the bank parking lot
with her one day
so people coming out
could see her and stop their rushing
for a minute

there was a tractor trailer
parked in the street
and when the burly looking man
came striding out of the bank
I knew it was the truck driver
I worried a little about him
so did Josa

but halfway to me he broke his stride
his whole self softened
as he reached to pet Josa
so gently – so gently
and said softly
“she’s wonderful”
and went on to his truck

it’s like I said
I’m not a bouncy clown

the night is dark and the day is done
mistakes were made and the race not run
then I sigh and think of a different way
how I could have changed the entire day

but I didn’t and now it’s over you see
so I take a breath and know I am free
to close my eyes, sing a song or two
till I wake and start a day – brand new

he called them “the girls”

this group of deer

who still make their way

across his lawn

to the small space of woods

on the other side of his street

—

“the girls” keep coming

despite the Saturn dealer

who cleared some trees

to make room for the Saturns

despite the Thruway

which shuttles cars and trucks

from west to east

and back again

despite the mall

built nearby

which spins the traffic

from out of control

to chaos

—

a little after dusk

I left his home

as “the girls” were

making their way too

—

one stopped in the street

to turn and look at me

we both stood still

but she was clearly wondering

if I had a permit

to be there

—
